Keys to Swimming Fast: Unity and Preparation

As we move deeper into training and the busy swim meet season, it’s essential for every member of our team to represent Alto with pride and unity. Just like you would see players arrive at a football game in matching team apparel, it’s important that we uphold that same standard. When our swimmers attend meets, their Alto team apparel sets them apart and reflects the strong, cohesive team we are.

To ensure everyone is prepared, the Apparel team has distributed all team shirts, parkas, and beanies/sweatshirts. It’s an Alto expectation that swimmers arrive at every meet in their full team gear. Not only does this foster team spirit, but it also demonstrates our unity and commitment.

Staying Warm for Peak Performance

With the weather turning colder and the rainy season approaching, staying warm is crucial. Swimmers often underestimate how being chilled before practice or a race can impact performance. Too many swimmers are showing up in only their swimsuits, which can lead to shivering and poor results. Staying warm helps prepare the body for optimal swimming performance. Even Olympic swimmers, competing in indoor facilities, wear warm clothing from head to toe before their races.

To keep warm, swimmers should wear:

  • Socks and closed-toe shoes/boots

  • Beanies

  • Red Alto sweatshirt

  • Long pants

If a swimmer enters the pool already shivering, it’s difficult for their body to perform at its best. Maintaining warmth helps ensure they are race-ready.

Fueling the Body Right

Another important note from our recent swim meets is nutrition. As Coach Joe says, “Fast food = slow swimming.” Too many swimmers were spotted eating burgers, fries, and pizza before their events. These foods are heavy and filled with oil, which makes them sit heavily in the stomach and slow the body down.

For the best energy and performance, swimmers should focus on eating quick-digesting carbohydrates such as:

  • Fruits

  • Applesauce

  • Whole grain crackers

These types of foods are more effective in providing the body with quick, efficient energy for racing.

By showing up to meets in the proper team apparel, staying warm, and fueling up smartly, we can continue to represent Alto with excellence and set ourselves up for faster, stronger swims. Let's keep up the great work and stay committed to these winning habits!
